PLAYOFF GREEN

CREATING A POSITIVE, LASTING "GREEN" LEGACY,
ONE CFP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP HOST COMMUNITY AT A TIME

Through its Playoff Green initiative, the College Football Playoff strives to minimize the environmental footprint of the national championship game and its ancillary activities. Playoff Green's comprehensive approach to sustainability ensures that recycling, waste management, food recovery and other "green" strategies are optimized throughout national championship weekend.

For Playoff Green to be successful, we need your help. PLEASE PLACE ALL PLASTIC AND ALUMINUM BOTTLES AND CANS IN DESIGNATED RECYCLING CONTAINERS. Over 1,000 of these recycling stations are positioned within the College Football Playoff’s event venues during national championship game week. Specifically, at the host stadium, our goal is to amplify the facility’s existing recycling efforts and triple the typical amount of game day materials, specifically plastic and aluminum, that are diverted from landfills.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transportation account for about 29% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, making it the largest contributor of U.S. GHG emissions. The buildup of GHG is causing the earth’s atmosphere to warm, resulting in climate changes. SO, PLEASE CONSIDER WALKING, BIKING, RIDE SHARING, TAKING A STREETCAR OR BUS, OR USING A PEDI-CAB TO GET AROUND THE CITY AND AMONG THE VARIOUS ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTPRINT.

KEY STRATEGIES

Key Playoff Green strategies for the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship in Houston:

SOLID WASTE RECYCLING

Solid waste recycling at major event venues, including the George R. Brown Convention Center, site of Playoff Fan Central, and at NRG Stadium, site of the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship. Look for members of the Playoff Green "Green Team" throughout the various College Football Playoff sites in Houston helping fans recycle.

FOOD RECOVERY AND DONATION

Food recovery and donation from all College Football Playoff events that serve food to fans. Through a partnership with Chef to End Hunger and Habitat for Humanity, food that is prepared but never served will be recovered safely and provided to the thousands of families in the Houston area who are struggling with hunger. Similarly, shelf-stable food and beverages will also be recovered from College Football Playoff sponsors and partners and distributed locally through various organizations.

MATERIALS REUSE AND REPURPOSING

Materials reuse and repurposing is an important strategy to keep materials out of landfills. Construction materials, décor and other event materials will be donated to local organizations for reuse and repurposing in the community, instead of going to waste.

RENEWABLE ENERGY CERTIFICATES (RECS)

Renewable energy certificates (RECS) provide a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address their impact on climate change. Game day energy usage in NRG Stadium will be "green" and powered through the use of renewable energy certificates (RECs).

DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS

Data collection and analysis helps us better understand our environmental impacts and drives the growth of the Playoff Green program.
